The Gallery Attendant reports to the Gallery Director and/or Assistant Curator and:

• Strong drawing and mechanical skills.
• Knowledge of  applicable design software (Photoshop, Storyboard Pro) and hardware (Wacom Cintiq monitor and/or tablet).

JOB PURPOSE:

The Museum Preparator III is a senior, expert-level position, working under minimal direction of the Exhibitions Registrar/Head of Preparation. Employees in this classification perform a larger variety of duties than those expected of the Preparator II level.

Education and Experience:

The 2017 program provides grants for innovative, creative leadership team building within elementary/middle schools. Beginning December 1, 2016, submit your application for the opportunity to receive a grant to help build your school's creative capacity. Each grant-winning school (up to 20 grants awarded) receives $2,500 and Crayola products valued at $1,000.

Residency: Awesome residency for artists of all mediums in the American Southwest (Kingman, AZ)

ArtHub is a new organization that provides four visual and literary artists a chance to concentrate on their creative efforts by offering free space to live and work for three months.

Housed on the lower floor is an open studio where those four artists will be able to make and display their artwork in the public eye.

The upper floor is a fully furnished, five bedroom apartment where the four artists-in-residence will stay. The space was completely renovated in the fall of 2014, built up by Angle Homes. Features include spacious bedrooms, a large living room, storage areas, two bathrooms, a kitchen/dining room with an island, wifi, and other extras.

Position Summary:

Greet visitors and professionally represent the organization at the reception desk of the Hollywood Bowl Museum. This position will be two days a week during the off season with the possibility of more shifts during the busy summer season.

Position Elements:

• Answer main telephones lines and direct callers.
• Greet guests and announce visitors. 
• Open and redirect general mail.
• Sign for daily deposit, packages, and direct messengers.
• Maintain the cleanliness and integrity of the museum and its exhibits.
• Be knowledgeable about current exhibits and Hollywood Bowl history.
• Process small cash transactions, and keep an accurate record of cash on-hand.
• Maintain and stock brochures in the lobby and ensure area is neat and welcoming.
• Maintain museum staff comp tickets during the respective seasons.
• Communicate with Operations and Museum Assistant about all building issues.   
• Work with Museum Assistant to maintain quality of museum.
• Work with Docents to represent the museum and organization.

Requirements

• Minimum 2 years administrative support experience in a fast-paced professional environment.
• Excellent phone manner and verbal communication skills.
• Must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and initiative.
• Strong analytical skills.
• Demonstrable ability to represent the Association in a professional manner both on the phone and in person.
• Good computer literacy and proficiency (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Internet based research, etc.). 
• Classical music and/ or museum background a plus.
• Must be able to correctly pronounce visiting artists, conductors and composers names.

Request for Proposals: Lake Linganore RFP Public Art Sculpture (Maryland)

Seeking professional artists with all of the following qualifications:  

• Demonstrated experience realizing permanent, large scale exterior public sculpture in low maintenance, highly durable materials. Must have successfully completed at least three exterior public art commissions with budgets of over $50,000.  Please note that this number is for qualifications purposes only and not the budget for the art piece as it has not yet been established out of the entire entrance construction budget.
• Experience working with private developers to create site-specific exterior public art in a residential housing development setting.
• Demonstrated success creating artwork incorporated into traffic medians or traffic circles, addressing issues such as local and state code, traffic sight lines, integration with public utilities, irrigation and lighting systems, maintenance and other issues unique to such sites.
• Experience with in-depth community engagement with diverse community members and other key stakeholders.
• Extensive experience working in collaboration with complex project teams including engineers, developers, landscape architects, community groups and government agencies such as departments of planning and permitting and departments of transportation.
• Available to begin work immediately and to meet the demands of a fast-track design process.  A $1,000 stipend will be paid to finalists to cover the expense of travel and a design proposal; no additional funding will be available for this phase.

Due to an accelerated construction schedule, finalist proposals must include detailed plans for foundations/footings appropriate to the site and to the requirements of the State of Maryland. Foundations will be excavated and poured well in advance of the sculpture’s installation.

Sited at the main entry to the residential ‘villages’ clustered around Lake Linganore, the proposed sculpture should reinforce the values of the community, both physically and symbolically, acting as both landmark and gateway.

Founded in 1968 by J. William Brosius, Lake Linganore is a planned community comprised of 15 villages surrounding a system of small lakes, the largest being Lake Linganore. The villages are connected by a series of small roads and an extensive network of trails, with plenty of open space and opportunities for natural recreation. Some of the original, built elements of the community were designed by the architect E. Fay Jones. Jones apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright, and an Arts and Crafts theme continues to inform the design aesthetic.

Call for Proposals: Maiden LA wants the thing you do (Los Angeles)

MAIDEN LA is an inclusive and expansive county-wide survey of art happenings throughout the month of August 2017. The program encourages self-initiation, the use of alternative spaces, and the consideration of the city as a platform for generative discourse and exchange. Maiden LA is an egalitarian program that aims to create an open forum for artists, collectives, curators, galleries, museums, et cetera, to connect and share.

MAIDEN LA--a playful anagram and homophone of ‘Made in LA’--is a call to assemble and host open studios, group shows, performances, or any variety of self-initiated projects in both traditional and unconventional spaces during the month of August.

Artists, organizers, and self-started spaces are encouraged to host an event anytime during the month, and to submit project details for inclusion in an online directory and interactive map. There will also be a limited edition fold-out map that will act as a physical guide to the network.

Location/Context History

The Asian American Monument Committee of New Mexico requests artists or artists’ teams to submit qualifications for designing a public art sculpture budgeted for $265,000 in honor of the landmark civil rights ruling from Territory v Yee Shun (1882) which affirmed the competency of Chinese Americans to testify in court and have their testimony accepted.  For additional information on the history of the case, email namasland@bernco.gov Successful applicants will demonstrate:

2.  An understanding of this court case and why it is still relevant to all Americans today. 

3. A broad history of Chinese Americans using the judicial system to advance and protect civil rights

Site:

The site for the sculpture is the urban environment in downtown Albuquerque at the Second Judicial District Courthouse in Albuquerque New Mexico at 400 Lomas Blvd NW, 87102.  The sculpture will be located on the west side of the court house.  (See attached photos.)

Project Intent/Theme:

The intent of this sculpture is to commemorate the landmark historic Chinese American civil rights ruling, Territory of New Mexico v. Yee Shun (1882).  This monument also honors the citizens and the legal system of New Mexico which recognizes that ‘justice and liberty for all’ is a principle for all ages and people. The sculpture should reflect the tenacity of the human spirit and speak to all people – not just Asian Americans, but could include elements of Asian American Culture. 

Media/Style/Size:

The committee seeks artists or artist teams who are proficient in large scale abstract sculpture who can evoke a contemplative and inviting space with their designs.  The size of the artwork should be proportionate to the scale of the courthouse and sidewalk and address the interactive and pedestrian nature of the location. Public safety is a concern. The artwork should not pose a threat of injury of any persons who may come in contact with the piece.

Project Funds:

$265,000 available to commission a work of art on the west side of the Second Judicial Courthouse - $255,000 from the New Mexico State Legislature and $10,000 from the City of Albuquerque.  A stipend of $2,000 will be provided to each of the three finalists to present their designs in person in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Timeframe:

The call is open for 60 days, three finalists will have 60 days to prepare their designs before presenting to the Asian American Monument Committee and the community in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Eligible artist or artist teams must reside in the United States.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

The Skirball’s In-school Residency Program provides students with opportunities to engage with issues that are important in their lives and explore how art can be a tool for social action. It strives to ignite students’ self-confidence, imagination, and sense of agency. Students and teachers work intensively over the course of 8-10 weeks with a teaching artist and Skirball educators to learn basic techniques in one or more creative disciplines. Each residency culminates in a professionally produced, student-created presentation at the Skirball Cultural Center.

MARK-MAKING IN LA: STORIES OF OUR STREETS

What is street art? Who speaks and who decides what counts as art? One class of high school students will embark on an immersive investigation of muralism, street art and the many other rich traditions of public artistic expression across Los Angeles and Mexico. Two Skirball exhibitions presented as a part of Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles/Latin America will serve as an entry point and framework for this residency—Another Promised Land: Anita Brenner‘s Mexico and Surface Tension by Ken Gonzales-Day. Guided by a teaching artist, students will explore the contemporary relevance of street art and design in our city, creating original work that shares their stories of life in Los Angeles.

TEACHING ARTIST RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop a syllabus and lesson plan for a series of workshops spanning 8 to 10 weeks,  September – December 2017
• Attend planning meetings with teachers and Skirball staff prior to the residency start date
• Meet deadlines for submission of materials
• Facilitate 1 or 2 hour in-school workshops weekly over 8-10 weeks and participate with the class in field trips to the Skirball
• Develop a culminating student-produced event at the Skirball, in collaboration with Skirball staff

QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified candidate will have professional experience using visual arts to explore issues of social justice, a practice influenced byMexican and/or Mexican American identity, fluency in both English and Spanish, and at least two years previous teaching experience (experience working with classroom teachers and/or high school students preferred). A successful candidate will be organized and communicative; flexible and able to adapt lesson plans based on feedback; passionate and inspiring with respect to their art form.

Music Tastes Good is an eclectic two-day music and food festival, taking place at an outdoor location in downtown Long Beach, CA on Saturday, September 30th & Sunday, October 1st. Inspired by our nation’s shipping ports, and more specifically, the Port of Long Beach, this year’s event draws heavily on cultural exchange and the import and export of sounds, flavors, and ideas.

The festival is looking for projects that:

1. Provide high impact with exceptional and visionary work.
2. Engage community through an artist-initiated process.
3. Exhibit cultural experimentation and innovation.

Ideal projects will embody one or both of the overarching and intertwined festival themes of musical performance and culinary arts.

All media is accepted. This includes, but is not limited to, painting, photography, sculpture, light projection, video, and all two-dimensional and three-dimensional work, new-media and any non-traditional media. Submission can be a single piece, a series, an installation with multiple components, or any other output that could be exhibited in an outdoor space. The space is big, really big. Think big, nothing but vast amounts of bigness.

Call for Entries: Summer Group Exhibition at DAC Gallery (Los Angeles)

The DAC Gallery is seeking submissions for its annual Summer Group Exhibition that will take place June 3rd - July 7th, 2017.

This call is open to all artists within the continental United States. There is no submission fee. Although the range of accepted mediums is largely open, the gallery is interested in emphasizing artwork that is wholly or in part, made from fiber-based materials. 

Submissions are due by 4PM on May 12, 2017 to DACGalleryLA@gmail.com. Submissions will only be accepted through email (Dropbox, WeTransfer, Google Drive, and compatible methods of large file delivery applications are acceptable). An opening reception will be held on Saturday, June 3rd from 6-8PM.
