Request for Proposals: Lake Linganore RFP Public Art Sculpture (Maryland)

Entry Deadline: 6/23/17

More information and apply here
Seeking professional artists with all of the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience realizing permanent, large scale exterior public sculpture in low maintenance, highly durable materials. Must have successfully completed at least three exterior public art commissions with budgets of over $50,000.  Please note that this number is for qualifications purposes only and not the budget for the art piece as it has not yet been established out of the entire entrance construction budget.
  • Experience working with private developers to create site-specific exterior public art in a residential housing development setting.
  • Demonstrated success creating artwork incorporated into traffic medians or traffic circles, addressing issues such as local and state code, traffic sight lines, integration with public utilities, irrigation and lighting systems, maintenance and other issues unique to such sites.
  • Experience with in-depth community engagement with diverse community members and other key stakeholders.
  • Extensive experience working in collaboration with complex project teams including engineers, developers, landscape architects, community groups and government agencies such as departments of planning and permitting and departments of transportation.
  • Available to begin work immediately and to meet the demands of a fast-track design process.  A $1,000 stipend will be paid to finalists to cover the expense of travel and a design proposal; no additional funding will be available for this phase.

Due to an accelerated construction schedule, finalist proposals must include detailed plans for foundations/footings appropriate to the site and to the requirements of the State of Maryland. Foundations will be excavated and poured well in advance of the sculpture’s installation.

Sited at the main entry to the residential ‘villages’ clustered around Lake Linganore, the proposed sculpture should reinforce the values of the community, both physically and symbolically, acting as both landmark and gateway.

Founded in 1968 by J. William Brosius, Lake Linganore is a planned community comprised of 15 villages surrounding a system of small lakes, the largest being Lake Linganore. The villages are connected by a series of small roads and an extensive network of trails, with plenty of open space and opportunities for natural recreation. Some of the original, built elements of the community were designed by the architect E. Fay Jones. Jones apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright, and an Arts and Crafts theme continues to inform the design aesthetic.

For additional community and background information:

 Artists should submit the following:

  1.  10 images
  2.  Image Description List, including all agencies artist worked with on the commission
  3.  Resume (No more than 4 pages; attached as a PDF)
  4.  250 Word Statement of Interest
  5.  250 Word Artist Statement
  6.  Four references

The Skirball Cultural Center presents programs that celebrate discovery and hope, foster human connections, and call upon us to help build a more just society.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

The Skirball’s In-school Residency Program provides students with opportunities to engage with issues that are important in their lives and explore how art can be a tool for social action. It strives to ignite students’ self-confidence, imagination, and sense of agency. Students and teachers work intensively over the course of 8-10 weeks with a teaching artist and Skirball educators to learn basic techniques in one or more creative disciplines. Each residency culminates in a professionally produced, student-created presentation at the Skirball Cultural Center.

MARK-MAKING IN LA: STORIES OF OUR STREETS

What is street art? Who speaks and who decides what counts as art? One class of high school students will embark on an immersive investigation of muralism, street art and the many other rich traditions of public artistic expression across Los Angeles and Mexico. Two Skirball exhibitions presented as a part of Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles/Latin America will serve as an entry point and framework for this residency—Another Promised Land: Anita Brenner‘s Mexico and Surface Tension by Ken Gonzales-Day. Guided by a teaching artist, students will explore the contemporary relevance of street art and design in our city, creating original work that shares their stories of life in Los Angeles.

  • Attend planning meetings with teachers and Skirball staff prior to the residency start date

  • Develop a culminating student-produced event at the Skirball, in collaboration with Skirball staff

QUALIFICATIONS

The qualified candidate will have professional experience using visual arts to explore issues of social justice, a practice influenced byMexican and/or Mexican American identity, fluency in both English and Spanish, and at least two years previous teaching experience (experience working with classroom teachers and/or high school students preferred). The Landing Room

If you need the comfort of an interior space, the Landing Room is brightly lit, has access to a full washroom and is conveniently close to everything. It has a double bed and lots of room for your gear.

Cost

The Honey and Salt residencies program is not a commercial project. Red Clay only charges a modest fee to help support the cost of the facility.

There are no paid staff or housekeepers, we are welcoming you into our homestead, it’s not much but it’s paradise.

Residency fees are as follows:

Cost per week:
Private Rooms $ 80
Tiny Cabins $ 70
Dorm Bed in the main house $ 60
Dorm Bed in the greenhouse $ 60
Camping Fees $ 40

Residency fees cover accommodation and studio space, heat, power and internet. Accommodation covers a furnished bedroom space or loft.

Facilities include; cooking, internet, solar shower & studio space.

Basic supplies such as toilette paper and cleaning supplies are provided.

Food, transportation, and workshops not included.

Fees are low because we are busy making art. We therefore, ask residents to try to be self-sufficient and offer mutual support.

Workshops

During the season, there are a number of scheduled weekend workshops. These workshops tend to bring a group of 10-15 people to the property. Resident artists can either pay a partial fee to participate, volunteer as a support person, or work on their own.

Food

Everyone is responsible for bringing their own food.

The kitchen is well stocked with spices and dry goods (rice, flour, chick peas, lentils and beans) and residents may use the kitchen inventory provided they restock. Restocking should be done before a resident leaves.

We often divide the preparation of meals into teams. The system is simple: if you are sharing in these meals please be sure that you are providing food, as well as, consuming it, this usually works out to cooking every other day or so. If you have severe allergies please contact redclayforest@gmail.com and let us know in advance.

If you have severe allergies please contact redclayforest@gmail.com and let us know in advance.

All dietary specification should be recorded on the kitchen chalkboard.

Bringing Friends, Kids and Animals

Friends are welcome, but we ask that everyone staying overnight contribute $8.00 each per night if not a part of another program. This daily fee does not include food.

Request for Qualifications: LA County ARts Commission seeks ARTIST(S) to Create ENGAGING artwork for new San Fernando mental health center (Los Angeles)

Overview
The Los Angeles County Arts Commission seeks an innovative artist(s) to design and create one or more compelling artwork(s) for the San Fernando Mental Health Center. Possible locations for artworks include the main entrance lobby, the children’s lobby/play room, conference rooms, group room, the hallway along the interview rooms and/or the interior outdoor courtyard. Construction on this new facility will begin in early 2018. The center will deliver an array of outpatient mental health services to children and their families. Mental health programs that serve the community will also be housed at the center. These programs include the Child Navigation Team, Psychiatric Mobile Response Teams and Law Enforcement Teams. These programs are field based, responding to the mental health needs of communities within Service Area 2. The artwork should be sensitive to the programs’ priorities and, in a thoughtful manner, address the needs of its clients. The artwork should be welcoming and engaging and establish a warm and comforting environment for the young clientele visiting the center. Delicate or fragile works should be designed to be out of reach of children.

Artwork Opportunities include:
1) The primary artwork opportunity is in the main entrance lobby, work may be sculptural
or 2D

2) Secondary interior spaces, including the children’s lobby/play room (2D or sculptural), two conference rooms (2D), group room (2D) and hallways (2D)

3) Interior outdoor courtyard (sculptural)

Permanent artworks are expected to be low maintenance and have a lifecycle of at least 25 years.

GOALS OF THE ARTWORK
San Fernando Mental Health serves the San Fernando community and the civic artwork will complement the center’s mission of “Enriching lives through partnerships designed to strengthen the community’s capacity to support recovery and resiliency.” The artwork selected will have the power to augment the experience for patients, visitors and staff to the center and enhance the atmosphere and environment in an uplifting way. The work should contribute to a warm and inviting experience for clients, which is in line with the building’s design goals.

BUDGET
All-inclusive artwork budgets will be developed during the artist selection process and will vary but will be approximately $70,000. This budget includes artist fees, liability insurance, artist travel, and all costs associated with the design, fabrication, delivery and installation of the artwork.

ELIGIBILITY
The commission(s) is open to professional artists residing in Southern California, defined as Ventura to San Diego Counties, who have demonstrated successful completion of a permanent large scale civic artwork. Artists who have artwork in the County’s Civic Art Collection will not be eligible unless this project has a higher budget than the previously commissioned project. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
The Los Angeles County Arts Commission Civic Art program strives to create artworks which reflect aesthetic and technical quality, innovation, site specificity and civic engagement. To ensure that the artwork meets the expectations of patients, visitors, staff, volunteers and other stakeholders, the selected artist or artist team will be required to participate in a rigorous design process. This process includes place-based research through creative engagement, site visits
and design meetings, conservator review, structural engineering, budget tracking and timeline management.

Artist applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:
Ability to create an artwork that will resonate with the facility’s patients, visitors, staff and the San Fernando Mental Health community; · Proven artistic merit and strong professional qualifications that demonstrate the artist’s ability to achieve the guiding principles of the Civic Art Program ( aesthetic and technical quality,
innovation, site specificity, civic engagement and the ability to transform a space and the user experience);
Ability to work with a government agency, architects and engineers; Ability to effectively assess the spatial and technical conditions of an architectural space and propose an integrated, easily maintainable artwork; and Experience managing a budget of similar scale and working within time constraints. Only artists who meet these criteria should apply.

SELECTION PROCESS
An artist will be selected through a two phased process. In the first phase, artists’ responses to this RFQ will be evaluated by the Project Coordination Committee, which will shortlist up to three finalists and one alternate. Artists should NOT send art proposals in response to this RFQ.

Finalists will receive $750 for development of a conceputal design proposal and presentation to the Project Coordination Committee (PCC).The PCC reviews artist applications, conducts finalist proposal presentation/interviews, selects the artists (or artist teams) and reviews the project from design development through artwork installation. The PCC is composed of nine to eleven representatives from applicable County departments, the citizen advisory committee and arts professionals. Grants: Long Beach Arts Council has a total of $4000 over 4 awards (Long Beach, CA)

RISK AND INNOVATION GRANT

The Arts Council believes in the transformative power of the arts. Through the Risk and Innovation Grant, we invite our creative community to explore problems in our city, nation and world. The arts are a platform for community engagement, collaborative problem solving and creative expression. The Arts Council invites local artists, performers, collectives and groups to create a work of art that expresses how they feel about an issue in our current political and social climate. Artists may approach this project in three ways: Use an issue you care about to create a work of art that communicates your perspective and passion; Learn about an issue that does not impact your everyday life and create a work of art that builds awareness; use social practice to bring people together for a collaborative creative effort. The projects will be presented in a public forum between June 1, 2017 and September 30, 2017. There will be four awards at $1000 each with a total of $4000 in funding.
