Job: REDCAT seeks Gallery Attendant Staff (PT) (Los Angeles)

REDCAT, the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater and Gallery, seeks Gallery Attendant Staff for its experimental 3000 sq ft space. Located in downtown Los Angeles and part of the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex, REDCAT is an interdisciplinary arts center presenting influential new works in the performing, visual and media arts. 

REDCAT is an initiative of the California Institute of the Arts, which offers programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and undergraduate and advanced certificates in art, critical studies, dance, film/video, music, and theater.

The Gallery Attendant reports to the Gallery Director and/or Assistant Curator and:

  • Monitors artwork in the gallery and ensures its safety and security;
  • Communicates with the public and answers questions about gallery exhibitions and programs;
  • Generates logs of visitors and monitors appropriate gallery behavior; 
  • Serves as an articulate spokesperson for REDCAT;
  • Performs light administrative duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Must be attentive and aware of surroundings;
  • Ability to communicate with the public in a friendly, professional manner;
  • Experience working in gallery/museum and audience services;
  • Must be able to work with a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends;
  • Interest in contemporary art, performance and media

OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW
The City of San Jose Public Art Program (SJPA) is creating a Roster of Pre-Qualified Artists. The purpose of the Roster is to streamline the artist selection process for a range of upcoming mural projects. Artists who are chosen for inclusion in the Roster will be eligible to be considered for future public art mural projects in San Jose. Inclusion in the final Roster will be for a period of three years.

Overview and Responsibilities

SUMMARY:

  • Nickelodeon Animation Studio is looking for a full-time Storyboard Artist for its hit animated series The Loud House! This positions is looking to start as quickly as possible (summer 2017). We are looking for someone who can easily grasp The Loud House's style - cartoony, comic strip-inspired. Great staging. This show is script-driven. A brief test will be required.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet with creative supervisors to discuss objectives of storyboard; what is desired or to be achieved.
  • Create storyboards by implementing storytelling objectives.
  • Follow instructions of creative supervisors.
  • Address any problems with creative supervisors; ask necessary questions.
  • Communicate progress of work to creative supervisors and to appropriate production staff.
  • Ensure quality and style of show is consistently achieved in storyboard work.
  • Follow proper document management requirements (i.e., file naming and storage) according to the production’s guidelines.
  • Meet all deadlines as determined by Line Producer or Production Manager.
  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings and pitches as needed.
  • Will required to pitch Storyboards.
  • Ensure all storyboard notes are added.

Basic Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must demonstrate proficiency in style of show.
  • Strong staging and composition skills.
  • Understanding of subtext in character performance. Portfolio samples must demonstrate that all characters in a sequence do not behave the same. They are unique. Think about which character in a scene is dominant, which is submissive. What are the undercurrents? Whose scene is it?
  • Strong drawing and mechanical skills.
  • Knowledge of  applicable design software (Photoshop, Storyboard Pro) and hardware (Wacom Cintiq monitor and/or tablet).
  • Strong time-management skills.
  • Work well under pressure.
  • Ability to multitask a plus.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant drawing experience necessary.
  • BA preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year storyboard experience and/or training on a similar show; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Major Job Responsibilities:

COUNCIL SUPPORT

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Getty Museum, the Trust Development Office and the members of the Museum's Councils.

Call for Proposals: Maiden LA wants the thing you do (Los Angeles)

MAIDEN LA is an inclusive and expansive county-wide survey of art happenings throughout the month of August 2017. The program encourages self-initiation, the use of alternative spaces, and the consideration of the city as a platform for generative discourse and exchange. Maiden LA is an egalitarian program that aims to create an open forum for artists, collectives, curators, galleries, museums, et cetera, to connect and share.

MAIDEN LA--a playful anagram and homophone of ‘Made in LA’--is a call to assemble and host open studios, group shows, performances, or any variety of self-initiated projects in both traditional and unconventional spaces during the month of August.

Artists, organizers, and self-started spaces are encouraged to host an event anytime during the month, and to submit project details for inclusion in an online directory and interactive map. There will also be a limited edition fold-out map that will act as a physical guide to the network.

Music Tastes Good is an eclectic two-day music and food festival, taking place at an outdoor location in downtown Long Beach, CA on Saturday, September 30th & Sunday, October 1st. Inspired by our nation’s shipping ports, and more specifically, the Port of Long Beach, this year’s event draws heavily on cultural exchange and the import and export of sounds, flavors, and ideas.

The festival is looking for projects that:

  1. Provide high impact with exceptional and visionary work.
  2. Engage community through an artist-initiated process.
  3. Exhibit cultural experimentation and innovation.

Ideal projects will embody one or both of the overarching and intertwined festival themes of musical performance and culinary arts.

All media is accepted. This includes, but is not limited to, painting, photography, sculpture, light projection, video, and all two-dimensional and three-dimensional work, new-media and any non-traditional media. Submission can be a single piece, a series, an installation with multiple components, or any other output that could be exhibited in an outdoor space. The space is big, really big. Think big, nothing but vast amounts of bigness.

The DAC Gallery is seeking submissions for its annual Summer Group Exhibition that will take place June 3rd - July 7th, 2017.

This call is open to all artists within the continental United States. There is no submission fee. Although the range of accepted mediums is largely open, the gallery is interested in emphasizing artwork that is wholly or in part, made from fiber-based materials.

I was part of a recent huddle in Los Angeles. It was an amazing experience to feel like we aren’t alone in our thinking about the current political climate. We talked about what is going on in our country and what we could do to make a difference.

This is one of my next steps. I am curating a mail art show at Brainworks gallery in August 2017.

At Ox-Bow, artists can enjoy 24-hour access to their studios, and an inspirational setting, free from the expectations of commercial and academic demands. During the fall season, Artists-in-Residence have the opportunity to work in studios not available during the summer session. The fall is an ideal time for writers to apply as there are studios dedicated specifically to them. It’s also a great time to propose group or collaborative work. The residency is open to all visual art disciplines and writers.

The residency provides:
• Studio (access to ceramic, printmaking, and painting studios—if you would like access to these facilities make sure this is clearly stated in your application)

• A community of engaged artists
• Opportunities to share work: slide presentations and/or readings

We are happy to announce that in 2016 Ox-Bow furthered its commitment to the needs of artists by no longer charging fees for the residency program (including application, room & board, and residency fees). All accepted residents are fully funded. Artists may apply for additional stipends to help pay for the cost of travel, supplies, and time away from work.

Program Description:Red Clay is offering weekly residencies for individuals seeking a place to work within the woods, by the sea.

Red Clay is located in Upper Economy Nova Scotia on the Bay of Fundy about 90-minutes from Halifax (see on google maps). Red Clay is a utopian homestead of gardens, lawns, pathways and ponds. Within this landscape, the Red Clay house has a well-lit studio space where resident artists can set up individual workplaces. The intention is for the space to be clean and uncluttered to allow for thought and introspection.

The Honey and Salt residency program is for creative and productive people who seek and can derive inspiration from a place to work from in rural Nova Scotia (such as a charming cabin in the woods) with access to a workspace or studio.

The culture of the residency is one of respect for each person’s work. Similarly, residents are expected to support the aesthetic by keeping the space and gardens beautiful.

The philosophy of the Honey and Salt residencies is to offer a quiet but interactive space for artists and creative workers, thinkers and planners.

Term

Residency terms may be from one week to three weeks.

No Honey and Salt Residencies are offered in August. Residency opportunities in August are offered through the White Rabbit Annual Residency

Application

Honey and Salt residents are accepted based on the quality of their application.

Applicants should request a specific length of residency and submit a brief statement of purpose and the dates requested.

Accommodations

Resident artists have a choice of accommodations: the white room in the main house, one of two small lofts in the Green House or “Candle”, the tiny cabin in the woods built for one person.

The Landing Room

If you need the comfort of an interior space, the Landing Room is brightly lit, has access to a full washroom and is conveniently close to everything. It has a double bed and lots of room for your gear.

Candle is a bed with a roof and has big windows looking down on the stream.

The Beebarn is in elevated above the apple orchard for a beautiful view of the Bay.

Studio Space

Residents will be provided with a work-station in the lower studio where they can leave tools and projects. However, residents are expected to keep their work area clean and orderly.

Cost

The Honey and Salt residencies program is not a commercial project. Red Clay only charges a modest fee to help support the cost of the facility.

There are no paid staff or housekeepers, we are welcoming you into our homestead, it’s not much but it’s paradise.

Residency fees cover accommodation and studio space, heat, power and internet. Accommodation covers a furnished bedroom space or loft.

Food, transportation, and workshops not included.

Fees are low because we are busy making art. We therefore, ask residents to try to be self-sufficient and offer mutual support.

Workshops

During the season, there are a number of scheduled weekend workshops. These workshops tend to bring a group of 10-15 people to the property. Resident artists can either pay a partial fee to participate, volunteer as a support person, or work on their own.

Food

Everyone is responsible for bringing their own food.

The kitchen is well stocked with spices and dry goods (rice, flour, chick peas, lentils and beans) and residents may use the kitchen inventory provided they restock. Restocking should be done before a resident leaves.

We often divide the preparation of meals into teams. The system is simple: if you are sharing in these meals please be sure that you are providing food, as well as, consuming it, this usually works out to cooking every other day or so. Bringing Friends, Kids and Animals

Request for Qualifications: LA County ARts Commission seeks ARTIST(S) to Create ENGAGING artwork for new San Fernando mental health center (Los Angeles)

Overview
The Los Angeles County Arts Commission seeks an innovative artist(s) to design and create one or more compelling artwork(s) for the San Fernando Mental Health Center. Possible locations for artworks include the main entrance lobby, the children’s lobby/play room, conference rooms, group room, the hallway along the interview rooms and/or the interior outdoor courtyard. Construction on this new facility will begin in early 2018. The center will deliver an array of outpatient mental health services to children and their families. Mental health programs that serve the community will also be housed at the center. These programs include the Child Navigation Team, Psychiatric Mobile Response Teams and Law Enforcement Teams. These programs are field based, responding to the mental health needs of communities within Service Area 2. The artwork should be sensitive to the programs’ priorities and, in a thoughtful manner, address the needs of its clients. The artwork should be welcoming and engaging and establish a warm and comforting environment for the young clientele visiting the center. Delicate or fragile works should be designed to be out of reach of children. 

Artwork Opportunities include: 
1) The primary artwork opportunity is in the main entrance lobby, work may be sculptural
or 2D

2) Secondary interior spaces, including the children’s lobby/play room (2D or sculptural), two conference rooms (2D), group room (2D) and hallways (2D) 

3) Interior outdoor courtyard (sculptural) 

Permanent artworks are expected to be low maintenance and have a lifecycle of at least 25 years. 

GOALS OF THE ARTWORK
San Fernando Mental Health serves the San Fernando community and the civic artwork will complement the center’s mission of “Enriching lives through partnerships designed to strengthen the community’s capacity to support recovery and resiliency.” The artwork selected will have the power to augment the experience for patients, visitors and staff to the center and enhance the atmosphere and environment in an uplifting way. The work should contribute to a warm and inviting experience for clients, which is in line with the building’s design goals. 

BUDGET
All-inclusive artwork budgets will be developed during the artist selection process and will vary but will be approximately $70,000. This budget includes artist fees, liability insurance, artist travel, and all costs associated with the design, fabrication, delivery and installation of the artwork. 

ELIGIBILITY
The commission(s) is open to professional artists residing in Southern California, defined as Ventura to San Diego Counties, who have demonstrated successful completion of a permanent large scale civic artwork. Artists who have artwork in the County’s Civic Art Collection will not be eligible unless this project has a higher budget than the previously commissioned project. San Fernando Mental Health provides mental health service, medication support, day treatment services and day rehabilitation, crisis intervention and crisis stabilization, targeted case management and therapeutic behavior service.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
The Los Angeles County Arts Commission Civic Art program strives to create artworks which reflect aesthetic and technical quality, innovation, site specificity and civic engagement. To ensure that the artwork meets the expectations of patients, visitors, staff, volunteers and other stakeholders, the selected artist or artist team will be required to participate in a rigorous design process. This process includes place-based research through creative engagement, site visits
and design meetings, conservator review, structural engineering, budget tracking and timeline management. 

Artist applications will be evaluated on the following criteria: 
Ability to create an artwork that will resonate with the facility’s patients, visitors, staff and the San Fernando Mental Health community; · Proven artistic merit and strong professional qualifications that demonstrate the artist’s ability to achieve the guiding principles of the Civic Art Program ( aesthetic and technical quality, 
innovation, site specificity, civic engagement and the ability to transform a space and the user experience); 
Ability to work with a government agency, architects and engineers; Ability to effectively assess the spatial and technical conditions of an architectural space and propose an integrated, easily maintainable artwork; and Experience managing a budget of similar scale and working within time constraints. Only artists who meet these criteria should apply. 

SELECTION PROCESS
An artist will be selected through a two phased process. In the first phase, artists’ responses to this RFQ will be evaluated by the Project Coordination Committee, which will shortlist up to three finalists and one alternate. Artists should NOT send art proposals in response to this RFQ. 

Finalists will receive $750 for development of a conceputal design proposal and presentation to the Project Coordination Committee (PCC).The PCC reviews artist applications, conducts finalist proposal presentation/interviews, selects the artists (or artist teams) and reviews the project from design development through artwork installation. The PCC is composed of nine to eleven representatives from applicable County departments, the citizen advisory committee and arts professionals. The Civic Art project manager serves as a non-voting advisor to the PCC and facilitates the selection process.
